Veterinarians

Dr. Shawn Wilson

Dr. Shawn Wilson earned his undergraduate degree from Va Tech in 1997 and his DVM from LSU in 2004. The family farm in Southwest PA provided the inspiration for Dr. Wilson to become the veterinarian he is today. Dr. Wilson enjoys the fast pace and intensity of emergency medicine. He treats each patient as if they were his own and is satisfied in the knowledge that he gives 100% to both patient and owner. He knows he has done his job when a family is reunited.

When not performing medical and surgical miracles, entertaining the CCAE staff with his endless collection of jokes or testing them on college sports teams Dr. Wilson is spending time with his wife of 6 years Melissa, daughter Gracie (3 years) and son Carter (6 months). Aries an 11-year-old Rottie and two cats Miles and Doby own and love the Wilson family.

Dr. Joy Goode

Dr. Joy Goode received her B.S. in Animal Science in 1989 from VPI & SU and her D.V.M. in 1993 from Va-Md Regional College of Veterinarian Medicine.

When Dr. Goode was 15 her German Shepherd puppy Schlitz required a blood transfusion due to a hookworm infection. She feels that was the moment that “hooked” her on caring for animals. Dr. Goode believes the most rewarding aspect of her job is helping the owners of sick pets during a very stressful and emotional event. She feels that in addition to healing, educating clients about their pet’s condition is paramount.

Dr. Goode grew up in the Baltimore-Annapolis area where most of her family still resides. Besides swimming, yoga, gardening, horseback riding and cooking she enjoys hiking with her many 4-legged family which includes Penny a yellow-lab, Jackie a Jack Russell Terrier and Elizabeth a Jack and Beagle mix.

When not out enjoying nature Dr. Goode can be found curled up on a couch next to her 75 gallon fresh water fish tank reading a good history book with Poppy, her 15 year old cat.

Shannon C. Panzer

Shannon graduated from Long Technical College in Phoenix AZ in 2002. During the last 5 years Shannon has worked in clinics around the country including Phoenix, Chicago and Westminster. Her experience includes general practice, Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Rehab and time with a board certified surgeon and radiologist. Shannon strives to learn about her field more each day and feels she is at her best when mentally stimulated.

While riding in a car with her mother at age 5 a dog was accidentally struck. Shannon made her mother drive to every house in the neighborhood until they found the dog’s owner. She knew from that moment on that her life would include helping animals in need. When not at work Shannon spends her remaining hours serving her country in the Coast Guard Reserve, enjoying a quiet dinner or two with her husband, her two cats Swivel Hip Raven and Mugsie Crenshaw and her dog Kayla which she proudly states are all rescue pets.

Holly I. Helfer

Five years with general practitioners and almost 6 years with a veterinary neurologist make up the 11 years Holly has spent as a veterinary technician. She began to pursue this career her last year of high school. Several years ago Holly tried her hand at real estate but the call of veterinary medicine and the vast rewards of helping animals in emergency situations were too strong.

Holly prides herself on facing the challenges of each case, her reliability and her never-ending pursuit to learn new things. She feels CCAE has the teamwork needed to quickly and effectively stabilize any patient and she enjoys knowing that she plays a major role in saving a life.

Holly relaxes after a difficult day by spending time with her two cats, family and friends whether it be playing cards, going to the movies or taking day trips.

Kirsten L. Bowers

Kirsten’s love for animal welfare goes back as far as she can remember. She has spent the last 12 years proving just that. Her goal has always been to treat each animal with dignity and respect and to insure each owner that his/her pet is the most important patient she has. Her easygoing nature creates the atmosphere needed when struggling to save any life.

Kirsten’s 14-year-old daughter keeps her busy when not at work. Together they enjoy hiking, canoeing and camping.
